Does Jerusalem have to be the capital of Israel?
In 1980, Israel passed the Jerusalem Law stating that a united Jerusalem is the eternal capital of the Jewish people. While I agree with that statement, my question is, does it have to be the political capital of the State of Israel? Mecca is the "capital" of Islam without being the seat of any Islamic government. New York and L.A. are the cultural capitals of the U.S. Is this a fair comparison to make with the Jews and Jerusalem? Can it be the religious and cultural capital of the Jews and Israel with Tel Aviv as the political capital? Would this make it easier to "share" Jerusalem with a future Palestinian state?

Jerusalem is recognized as a holy city in all three Abrahamic religions, so whoever "possesses" it kind of has power. Jewish people claim it as a land they possessed first, and that it was given away by powers that had no authority to do so. Ironically by the same powers that set up the physical Israel. There’s a mosque right next to the wailing wall, so it’s going to be a hot issue for centuries.
Bolivia has two capitals, La Paz and Sucre, so it’s not all that odd. I just wouldn’t worry about it
jerusalem should just be declared its own sovereign state, or something to that effect. it would end alot of problems.
and to the first poster. it doesnt matter if you think it is a country or not, it is. i dont have to recognize the moon, that doesnt mean its not there. by your logic i dont have to recognize iran as a country? i mean, i dont particularly like it, so im just not going to recognize it as a country, it belongs to the safavids, so its not a country. hell, the US rightfully belongs to the native americans, does that mean its not a country?
ahhh his answer was deleted, oh well
Jerusalem evokes an emotional response from Jews (as well as Christians and Muslims) that Tel Aviv never will. There’s a mystique and prestige to the ancient city that Tel Aviv will never have. It is not necessary that the capital of a country be its economic center. We might well call Wall St. the economic capital of the US, but Washington DC remains the capital.
There’s really very little chance of sharing Jerusalem with Palestine. If Palestine is to gain ground in Israel, it’s pretty unlikely to be in Jerusalem regardless of the nation’s capital.
